Why We Love Blacklick, Ohio
Blacklick is located in the southern part of Jefferson Township. The Central Ohio suburb was founded in 1852 by William A. Smith. Originally, the community had the name Smithville. Because there was another town with that same name at the time, however, they renamed it “Black Lick” using two words because of the creek nearby with the same name, the Big Walnut Creek. Originally, historian W. Edson Richmond believed that Black Lick Creek got its name from a landowner in the area, which was H. G. Black. Nevertheless, historians later learned Henry George Black had not been born until 1817, and an old map showed the river was there in 1806. Blacklick was originally founded as a stop along the railroad line. Eventually, the community became a much more popular destination as the Columbus area grew and it has remained so ever since.
