Why We Love Galena, Ohio
Gahanna was settled in 1849 along the Big Walnut Creek by John Clark of Ross County. The city came from 800 acres of land that the settler’s father, Joseph Clark, obtained in 1814 from Ohio Governor Worthington in 1814. Originally, Clark called the property the Gahanna Plantation. This is how the city got its name. “Gahanna,” in fact, is believed to be the American Indian word that describes “three creeks joining into one.” It is the original name of the Big Walnut Creek. Today, Gahanna’s Official Seal for the city refers back to this confluence of three creeks. It bears the inscription “Three In One.” In its early years, Gahanna had a rivalry with an adjacent village, Bridgeport. Bridgeport was settled in 1853 by Jesse Baughman, a former Franklin County Commissioner. Eventually, these two towns settled their rivalry and merged into one municipality. When they merged, they adopted the name Gahanna because there was already another village in Ohio with the name Bridgeport.
