Why We Love Powell, Ohio
Powell has a population of around 13,353. The city is located in Delaware County, Ohio. Historians say many of Powell’s first residents moved there from Middlebury, Connecticut. Because of this, the town was originally named Middlebury, and it was settled in 1801, two years before Ohio officially became a state. Then, in 1857, the local Judge Thomas Powell opened the first post office in the town. Later, local residents in the village decided to change the town’s name in honor of him. Over time, Powell grew with the construction of a railroad passing through the area. In 1947, Powell was officially incorporated as a municipality. The town’s population remained small until the late 1980s, when residential development grew in the northern Columbus area. When this happened, within 20 years, the population of Powell spiked from less than 400 people to more than 6,000. Powell is widely considered one of the best places to live in the state. In July 2005, the city was ranked by CNN and Money magazine as the “18th Best Place to Live” on a list of the “100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” Powell is located between the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, about 14 miles north of Columbus near the intersection of State Route 750 and County Road 9 in Liberty Township. Powell is said to be the first settlement in Delaware County.
