Upper Arlington is well known for its rich culture, unique history and thriving art scene. The city is also the home of many famous and influential people. It is a suburb located on the northwest side of Columbus. The city has a population of about 35,364. Prior to it becoming a town, the land area upon which the city is located was originally the home of the Adena people. The Adena were legendary for building cone-shaped mounds. These mounds remain today. They were elaborate burial sites. Centuries after the Adena people, the Wyandot people lived in the areas. They were later forced out by the U.S. Government. The land was granted to Revolutionary War soldiers as payment for their service in the nation’s war for independence from European colonial rule. These war soldiers eventually sold their land to settlers and families in the 1800s. In 1913, two brothers and real estate developers, King and Ben Thompson, founded the 840-acre area of land that would become Upper Arlington.  After the second world war, there was a housing boom in the area that resulted in residential development north of Lane Avenue in Upper Arlington. These new homes looked very much different than the older homes in the original core of the city.  Because of this, the southern half of Upper Arlington was designated as the “Upper Arlington Historic District,” which many refer to simply as “Old Arlington.” In 1985, Old Arlington earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
