Why We Love Westerville, Ohio
Although you wouldn’t be able to tell today, this Central Ohio city was at one time known as the “Dry Capital of the World.” Westerville is a northeastern suburb of Columbus that’s located in Franklin and Delaware counties. The city has a population of 40,443. The city is the home of Otterbein University. For centuries, many ancient cultures once lived in the area of Westerville. The area was home to Paleolithic Indians, and their descendants. These tribes inhabited the area between Big Walnut Creek and Alum Creek. After Europeans arrived in the area, the Wyandot Indians were the main inhabitants. They lived along the Alum Creek and were forced out of the area in 1843. The area that became Westerville was settled by those of European ancestry (Dutch to be exact) in 1810.
During the Antebellum era, several homes in the Westerville area became stations along the Underground Railroad. Among these homes, there was the Hanby House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hanby House earned dedication as a museum in 1937. Today it is owned and managed by the Ohio Historical Society. In 1859, Westerville passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcohol.
