Why We Love Whitehall, Ohio
Whitehall is an enclave on the east side of Columbus. The city has a population of 18,944. Going back to the 1940s and 1950s, Whitehall still had farms working in the area. The town was of said to be of a mixed income with mostly smaller homes. Although Whitehall was still a village in the 1940s, local residents filed for incorporation as a city in the year 1947. Then, in 1952, the town’s limits spread eastward to Big Walnut Creek. Because of their sudden growth, in the 1950s, Whitehall became a city. In 1948, Whitehall became home to the first shopping center strip in the country, which was called Casto’s Town & Country. Additionally, the National Road also passed through Whitehall. Then, in 1970, Whitehall made national news and headlines throughout the country when two of their department stores were bombed during a robbery. The culprit was trying to create a diversion using the bombs. The suspect was named William Harris. He was arrested that day by a brave civilian, who chased him down and held him down for the police.
